Dresden Initiative for Bioactive Interfaces & Materials
Interdisciplinary research initiative headed by Profs. Rainer Jordan, Carsten Werner and Stefan Diez will start its activities in May 2014
Supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), the TU Dresden established the interdisciplinary Dresden Initiative for Bioactive Interfaces & Materials (DIB) as a measure of the Dresden Institutional Strategy concept within the German Excellence Initiative.
The DIB bundles forces in the fields of chemistry, (bio)physics, materials science and nanotechnology towards the engineering of unique environments to instruct - or to be instructed by - biological matter. The engineered systems will allow novel approaches in the fields of theragnostics, biosensorics, nanomedicine, regenerative therapies, synthetic biology, micro- and nanomechanical biomimetics, as well as integration of electronics in biological environments. The research objectives will cross all length scales (nanometer to macroscopic) and dimensions (0D to 4D) as those are equally relevant for the interaction of biological systems with non-biological environments and vice versa.
The DIB integrates into Dresden's strong bioengineering and biotechnology landscape by collaborating with the excellence clusters cfAED and CRTD, the B CUBE, the BIOTEC, the MPI of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics and the Max Bergmann Center of Biomaterials. An important part of the DIB activities will be collaborative research with the Triangle Materials Research and Engineering Center (MRSEC Triangle) in North Carolina, the Wyss Institute at Harvard University and the ETH Zürich.
DIB will start its research activities in May 2014.
