'Open Topic Postdoc' Anja Buttstedt started at B CUBE
On 1 November 2017, Dr. Anja Buttstedt started her position at B CUBE in the group of Prof. Michael Schlierf. She is one of 18 young scientists that began working at the TU Dresden as part of so-called "Open Topic Postdoc Positions". Any postdoctoral scientist could apply for a research project for these new positions, regardless of the subject (open topic). The only condition was that the project fits the research profile of the TU Dresden.

During her time at B CUBE she will work with major royal jelly proteins (MRJPs) of the western honeybee Apis mellifera. These proteins have been first identified in royal jelly, a secretion of the hypopharyngeal and mandibular glands of young worker honey bees that is used to rear female larvae to majestic queens. Due to the high abundance of essential amino acids in these proteins it has been assumed that they have mainly nutritional functions during larval development. With the release of the honey bee genome it became clear that MRJPs are not only comprised of the four MRJPs actually present in royal jelly but moreover of nine proteins whose encoding genes (mrjp1 – 9) are located in a tandem array on chromosome 11.

As an Open Topic Postdoc at the B CUBE, Dr. Buttstedt will decipher further functions of MRJPs by combining research on native MRJPs purified from RJ and recombinant MRJPs expressed in E. coli. For this aim the B CUBE provides a perfect research environment combining excellent equipment with expert knowledge on protein biochemistry.
